"You don't have a willpower problem," my friend said, nudging aside the gummies, the detox tea and the notebook of diet rules on my counter. "You're stuck on a ride that restarts after every meal."
"I'd already cut the sugar," I told her. "The bread, the sweet tea, the dessert. The 3 PM crash still shows up."
She pulled a notepad off the counter and clicked her pen.
"Let me show you what's happening."
She drew one wavy line across the page.
"First, each meal breaks starch into sugar fast. The faster it lands, the steeper the hill."
"Second, the rise after eating climbs, then crashes — straight into the 3 PM slump and the cravings. That's the pantry raid. It isn't weakness."
"And third — this is the part nobody says — that swing keeps the storage signal switched on all day." She tapped the line. "Eating less sugar shrinks the hills. But you're on the same ride."
"Wait," I said. "So I've been cutting things while the swing just kept going?"
"Exactly." She smiled. "The swing after meals is what most fixes never touch."
